IRC
From Fraxy Compendium Redux
This is a small tutorial to using IRC and connecting to the channels using Mibbit. As noted on the front page, there is an IRC channel dedicated to the Compendium, called #fraxy. Its purpose is to give people a place to directly come and discuss things they are doing, ask for input, and ask questions in real time. Some may not have ever heard of IRC before and may not have an IRC client, used to connect with IRC channels. Some of the more popular ones are mIRC and Chatzilla. For those that do not want to download any external IRC programs, you can use Mibbit, which is a web based IRC client.

Getting Connected using board2's client
In order to use board2's client, simply click this link.
Right now you're in #acmlm, in order to get into the Fraxy channel, type this command: /join #fraxy.
Getting Connected using Mibbit
First, go to The Mibbit Website.
Then at the bottom of the left side, click "Start chatting now >>".
You will be presented with a window that looks like this:
Next to IRC: and the pulldown menu, you'll see Server Auth Charset. Click on Server and Auth, to get two sub menus.
In server address type in aoi.irc.djbouche.net, nucleus.kafuka.org, or kuroi.irc.djbouche.net (Note: "nucleus.kafuka.org" and "kuroi.irc.djbouche.net" lead to the exact same server, they're just alternate names for it). The other part can be left blank for now until you register your name or nick.
Next to Nick: put in a name, this is the name that will be used in the server. If you are new, this will not be registered yet but don't worry about that just yet.
Next to Channel: put in #fraxy. This will directly connect to the Fraxy channel. The other main channel for board2 is #acmlm.
It should look something like this:
After all of the information is filled in, click Go.
Basic IRC
If this is your first time in the server, you'll want to register your nick. To do that, type the following:
- /msg nickserv register password email
This will tell the server (nickserv) that you want to register your IRC nick (register) under a given e-mail address (email) and it will use the password (password). Here is an example: Say I have the name JohnJohn and I want to register it. Once I'm on the channel, I type /msg nickserv register john4 john@whatever.net. This will register JohnJohn with the e-mail john@whatever.net and it will have the password john4.
Once that is done, you can now put something in the Auth section on Mibbit. Make sure the pulldown menu says NickServ. In the box next to that, put in the password of your nick.
Here are some commands you can do in IRC.
- /join #(channel name) - This will put you into another channel on the server. If it doesn't exist, it will be created.
- /help - Shows a list of commands, at least on Mibbit.
- /nick (new nick) - Changes your nick to whatever is specified.
- /list - Shows all of the IRC channels on the server, the topics of each one, and other information.
- /away (message) - This puts you in away status. Any messages directed to you will respond with the away message.
- /me (action) - This performs an action on your nick. It's simply your nick then whatever the "action" says.
- /leave - This makes you leave the given channel.
- /part - This makes you leave the given channel.
- /quit (message) - This makes you leave the server and sends the message you typed or a default one if not specified.
Some Guidelines
Here are some guidelines and etiquette rules you should follow on the channel:
- You can act silly sometimes but do not overdo it. It will get annoying fast.
- Do not spam (mass post) links and such. If you do this about 5 times in a row, you'll be autokicked.
- Do not joke about wanting to be kicked/banned. You will just paint a bullseye on yourself.
- Do not insult others and their ideas harshly. If they say something inappropriate, then they will be dealt with.
- Do not abuse your power. It creates mistrust.
- If you have a problem, PM one of the mods about it.
- Do not try to circumvent a ban, you'll only make things worse. Go though proper channels or wait it out.
